Apple Event Liveblog: iPhone 14, Apple Watch, and More

Apple will take the wraps off its newest iPhone and Apple Watch today. We’re also expecting a few surprises.

Welcome to our Apple event liveblog. We are live on the ground at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California for the expected launch of the next iPhone. We are also expecting the company to unveil the next generation of the Apple Watch, as well as a new set of AirPods. In addition to all these devices, we'll see some presentations from Apple employees highlighting the new features within the software that runs on them. The main event begins at 10 am Pacific/1 pm Eastern. Stay on this page to get live, up-to-the-minute updates on all the news, plus analysis and insight from our reporters at the event. Hang with us, it's a fun time.

We've also got Adrienne So's deep dive (get it?) on the Apple Watch Ultra, and how the sub-three-day battery life may make it tough for it to compete with the other premium outdoors smartwatches that currently dominate that market.

It looks like Apple is waiting until October to release iPadOS 16 and MacOS Ventura—further proof the company will hold another hardware event that same month to announce new iPads and Macs.

If your Deep Purple iPhone detects a crash while you are on a highway and then needs to search for a satellite to call for help, is that a Highway Star?

Dammit why didn't I think of this joke during the show.

The arrival of iOS 16 will bring with it Apple's newly added support for passkeys. This is the latest salvo in the great war against passwords; your devices' biometric sensors will soon be all you need to log into websites, apps, and internet services. Here's our explainer on everything you need to know about passkeys.

Grant brings up a good point. We might see more about HomePod and/or HomeKit later this year. But also we might not. Watch this space.

And that's a wrap on the presentation. (I almost typed “live event” by accident.) We'll be posting some more updates this afternoon as news trickles in from Apple about release dates for iOS and iPadOS, as well as more details about the products that were announced today.

The iPhone 14 Pro is $999 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is $1,099. Preorders start Friday and they go on sale September 16.

You can also buy the iPhone 11 for $429, iPhone 12 for $599, iPhone 13 for $699. The iPhone Mini is truly gone from Apple's lineup, I think.

So basically, to test these iPhones, I have to get into a crash, then get stranded in the middle of nowhere, and I can use the new 48-MP camera to cinematically film my daring, action-y escape.

It's three cameras but there's technically a new “2x” zoom that delivers high-quality 12-megapixel photos with the primary 48-megapixel camera. So, as Apple says, four zoom levels!

Stats, Specs. Maybe I'm a Leo, but I love the Deep Purple color.

Apple has noted the environmental impact of buying a new iPhone so many times that I feel obligated to point out that you can actually buy jewelry made from the precious metals in old phones! When my iPhone 11 finally ties, I want a dog tag made from its remains.

Not going to lie, I love the smooth animations of the Dynamic Island. Still not sold on the name though.
