Viva Aerobus launches direct flights between Austin and Monterrey

The flights were reportedly requested by Tesla as the company plans a factory in the Mexican city.

AUSTIN, Texas — Airline Viva Aerobus has announced a new nonstop flight out of Austin. Nonstop flights to Monterrey, Mexico, begin on March 22.

According to the Austin Business Journal (ABJ), six new flights were prompted by the development of a new Tesla factory opening up in Monterrey.

The year-round service will operate four days a week, on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays.

The low-cost airline based in Mexico has been flying out of Austin since 2021.

“This new route not only connects two individual cities but provides Austin and Central Texas passengers with a wide range of connecting flights that link Monterrey to over 30 key destinations to discover Mexico. It also represents more opportunities for Mexican travelers to enjoy the beauty of the capital of the Lone Star State of Texas, serving leisure, VFR, and business markets; thus boosting local tourism and economy," CEO of Viva Aerobus Juan Carlos Zuazua said in a release announcing the route in September.

Nuevo Leon Gov. Samuel Garcia Sepulveda expects Tesla break ground on its Mexico factory “very soon,” according to the ABJ.

Viva Aerobus will also be launching direct flights between Monterrey and Oakland, California, in the Bay Area, in about six weeks. Tesla has been growing its engineering division in that area and also requested those flights, Sepulveda told the ABJ. The Oakland flights will run three days a week.
