Tiger Woods is set to receive one of the most prestigious awards in golf.

Woods was bestowed the Bob Jones Award from the USGA for his "commitment to sportsmanship and respect for golf's traditions." It is the highest honor awarded by the USGA and CEO Mike Whan said it was due to more than just his tremendous play on the course.

"This award goes beyond playing performance, recognizing the lasting impact of one person's journey that has forever changed the image and growth of golf," Whan said, per ESPN. "There are very few who stand alongside Tiger Woods in terms of on-course accomplishments, and he is in a class of his own when it comes to the impact he has made on the game and future generations who will play it."

Woods released a statement after receiving the award and expressed his honor in being associated with Jones.

"Bob Jones was a pillar of our game because of the integrity with which he played it, and I'm truly humbled to receive the award that bears his name and join the many who have received it before me who continue his legacy," Woods said.

Jones was a star golfer in the early 20th century who notably competed as an amateur and won the Grand Slam in 1930. He also was a co-founder of Augusta National Golf Club and created The Masters tournament.

Woods has excelled at that tournament in particular, with five wins in his career, and overall has 82 career PGA Tour victories and 15 major victories.

He also founded the TGR Foundation and has spearheaded several philanthropic ventures in his career.

Woods is set to be honored June 12 during the 2024 U.S. Open. The award has been presented annually since 1955 and previous winners include Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Francis Ouimet, Annika Sorenstam and George H.W. Bush.
