Gov. DeSantis encourages Florida schools to crack down on books containing pornographic, explicit material
Gov. DeSantis gave a news conference at the University of Central on Thursday to speak on the banning of books from schools that contain explicit material.
During the speech he said the Florida Board of Education is working to ensure students are not presented with obscene material that promotes sexual ideas.
He said this came after multiple parents in the state of Florida raised concerns on the type of books and assignments their children were doing in school.
DeSantis highlighted that the books are not being banned from the state itself but just from schools. Those who want to read or purchase certain books are allowed to do so.
Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. joined the governor and said books about Roberto Clemente, a Puerto Rican baseball player, and Ruby Bridges, an American Civil Rights activist, are not banned for classrooms.
Out of the 67 counties in the state of Florida, the governor said 42 counties have not made any complaints about the books that were banned.
He explained the goal is to ensure parents' voices are prioritize over those who don't have kids learning in the state of Florida.
