Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and Mumias East MP Peter Salasya have set aside their differences and pledged to work together.

The two leaders who hail from the Mumias East constituency put their differences aside and committed to changing the lives of residents by bringing resources closer to them.

“As the Governor of this great County, I am responsible for uniting all our leaders and I am glad to welcome back one of our own MP PK Salasya to work with us. What has been happening in the past was a small misunderstanding but that has been sorted,” Barasa said.

Barasa spoke after MP Salasya paid the Governor a courtesy call at the County Headquarters on Monday.

The feud between the two leaders emanated from the running and management of Mumias Sugar where they differed on whether the investor Sarrai Group should proceed with the works or not.

What followed was a fierce clash between supporters of the two leaders both in public forums and on social media.

“On 2027 succession politics we will cross the bridge when we get there but I want to assure the Governor that I will be leading his team from the front. As for now, we want to prioritise service delivery to the people of Kakamega,” Salasya said.

Speaking during a previous event, Salasya noted that Luhya unity could not be achieved when leaders and people in senior positions are fighting.

He urged leaders from the western region to work together in harmony, urging the clergy to pray for him to be a good leader.

“I have sat with the Governor, now I want to sit with fellow MPs because I have been the stubborn one but I don’t want to disturb anymore. The Governor and I have agreed to work together,” he said.

The dispute between the two affected the seamless roll-out of development projects as Salasya kept off Governor's events in his constituency,

This includes the launch of 10km ward roads in the three wards, distribution of subsidised fertiliser and launch of electricity supply in Elwakana village, Lubinu-Lusheya ward and many more.

“This morning when I was coming to church our area MP called me and asked me to bring his regards since he is away on official duty. As a father, I am glad to have one of our sons back home and I welcome you Salasya so we can continue working together,” Barasa said during a Church service Sunday.

In a previous video that has since gone viral, the lawmaker said he was ready to bury the hatchet with Governor Barasa and warned those who had taken advantage of their ‘fallout’.

“Nimekaa na nikaangalia hii vita ambayo imekua katikati yangu na Governor Barasa nikasema lazima tukae chini kama viongozi tukue na amani. Na hiyo imekua ikifanya viongozi wengine wanakusanya pesa kutoka kwangu na Barasa lakini sahii nimefunga iyo mifereji na nitafanya na yeye Kazi,”he said.

Loosely translates to “ I have reflected on the differences we had with Governor Barasa and decided that it is necessary as leaders we make peace.  Some leaders have been leveraging the differences to obtain money from both the Governor and me but I have resolved that must come to an end and I will work with the governor".
