DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) - WALB is starting to sort out some of the details of a bizarre triple shooting where people started shooting at each other in Douglas. Witnesses and family members have now spoken out about the incident.

Douglas police say Carrie Ann Johnson, 35, was an instigator and primary aggressor in a chain reaction exchange of gunfire between two people when police say small kids were present.

“She pulled up and was like, ‘where is her money’ - well where was her $300, to be exact? And then she shot Nard, and then she shot Jackie, and then Nard shot her,” Lachelle Paulk, a family member and witness, said.

Some wondered why she wasn’t in custody in the hospital.

“If it had been me, him, her, they probably would’ve taken you to jail first, and then sent you to the hospital and then when you got there, you would’ve been handcuffed to the bed and a guard would’ve been at the door,” a family friend who will anonymous said.

So WALB asked the chief of police.

WALB’s Ashanti Isaac: “Is there protocol as to why that happened and why there wasn’t security or police officers waiting for her?”

Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette: “She was transported to another facility because she was listed in critical but stable condition. And then somehow she made it back to CRMC and while she was there she signed herself out and then once we were notified that that already happened, that’s when we located her and arrested her but we didn’t know that until after the fact.”

After it all, witnesses were most upset that the kids were present.

“It could’ve been way worse than what it was,” Paulk said. “A bullet doesn’t have a name and that’s what made me mad, you didn’t take into consideration their lives.”

“Basketball goal and a trampoline on the side of the road, that’s what kids do and you pull up, c’mon man,” the family friend said.

Johnson faces a slew of charges, including two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and four counts of cruelty to a child.

She was booked into the Coffee County Jail at around 9 p.m. on Thursday night. She remains there.
