Greenville Water wins 'Best Tasting Water' in South Carolina, heads to national contest
It's colorless and doesn't have fizz or flavors, but Greenville, South Carolina, water is once again considered some of the best in the country and is up for another national award. Greenville Water has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious South Carolina American Water Works Association's 2024 Exemplary Source Water Protection Award for Very Large Source Water Systems (100,000 or more service connections), the utility announced. The water system, which serves more than 500,000 customers, won the Best Tasting Water in the state at the South Carolina Environmental Conference last week. Mount Pleasant came in second, and Charleston Water was third out of 17 entrants, according to Greenville Water Commissioner Deb Sofield."Greenville Water takes pride in the quality of its water — in particular, the water sourced from its two owned and operated watersheds of Table Rock and North Saluda," the utility said on its website. "The protection of these pristine watersheds is of paramount importance to the Commission and senior leadership as demonstrated by the significant commitment to protect these critical company resources. As stewards of these two watersheds, Greenville Water has sought not only to maintain the unspoiled conditions of our watersheds but has worked to reach out to our community partners to assure that the watersheds remain pristine for future generations of South Carolinians."The largest water supplier in the state, Greenville Water, draws its water from three sources: Table Rock Reservoir, North Saluda Reservoir and Lake Keowee. In the latest water quality report of 2022, the utility said it collected 27,887 samples and performed 113,930 tests as the water was delivered to customers through 3,091 miles of pipeline. The 2022 Water Quality Report showed the drinking water meets all federal and state drinking water standards.Greenville Water is considered very soft with total hardness averaging less than 1 grain of minerals per gallon, the utility said. Water is considered hard or soft based on its amount of trace minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium, according to WebMD. "The hard work of many Greenville Water team members, both past and present, has gone into ensuring the highest quality source water in the United States," Greenville Water CEO Jeff Boss said. "I want to assure you that your Commissioners and I are committed to continuing policies that ensure the highest quality, affordable, and sustainable drinking water."By winning the state competition, Greenville Water now has the opportunity to regain the title of the nation’s “Best of the Best” drinking water in the national competition.It's an award the water system previously won the award back in 2011. The national blind taste test is held annually.The AWWA award will be presented at the American Water Works Association Annual Conference in Anaheim, California, in June.
