An audience of 100 gathered in Marshall to protest a new power line running from the Rockdale substation to the Columbia substation. The new 345 KV line was a Madison Gas and Electric project with cooperation with Wisconsin Power & Light.

The Columbus Rotary Club presented its annual “Springtime Harmony” Barbershop Show at the high school.
An ad hoc committee was appointed by Mayor Peter Kaland to study the replacement or repair of the swimming pool bath house that had been damaged by a recent fire.

The Future Problem Solvers team at Columbus High School placed sixth out of 41 schools in a statewide competition. Students are given a theoretical situation, must analyze and research it, and then write up a solution. The program is geared towards gifted and talented students. Ann Hofman, Bill Dieck, Corrie McAliley, Ben Zeier, and Dylan Schleicher made up the team with library aide Sharon Rowe as coach.
David Weidemann, an administrative assistant in the office of student programs and services at UW-Oshkosh, was honored for his 23 years as “one of the state’s most outstanding track and field officials.” Since 1981, he started or served as a referee for 17 state track and field championship meets. Weidemann was a track star at Columbus High School and at UW-Oshkosh.
2004
The Columbus Fireman’s Service Corporation purchased a used medium rescue/air supply vehicle. Funds were raised from proceeds from the Carson and Barnes Circus and the many years of flipping pancakes during their annual pancake breakfasts.
Two Columbus School District administrative retirements were announced this week. Nikki Mason, Columbus Elementary School principal, and Mike O’Brien, Columbus High School assistant principal/athletic director, announced that they would be retiring at the end of the current school year.
