NEWBURYPORT — The political action group Indivisible-RISE Newburyport is showing a film called “The Young Vote” followed by remarks from a youth activist featured in the film. The event will be held at The Screening Room on Tuesday, March 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There is no charge for the event and the public is welcome, but advance registration is required due to limited seating.

“The Young Vote” is an award-winning documentary that follows a diverse group of students and young activists to understand young people’s perceptions of voting and civic engagement. The film addresses concerns about democracy, voter suppression, and what motivates citizens aged 18-35 to register and vote.

Sohia DeLoretto-Chudy, an activist featured in the film, will join by Zoom following the film to offer insights about increasing voter turnout in this year’s elections and answer participants’ questions. She wrote her 2018 college thesis on why young people did not vote in 2016, and she has devoted her so-far short career to increasing engagement in the political process, particularly by young people. DeLoretto-Chudy has worked with political campaigns and organizations in California, Georgia and Texas.

“We are so pleased to screen this film and hear from a young activist,” said Debbie Hart-Klein, a leader of Indivisible-RISE and one of the event organizers. “Bringing our community together to watch ‘The Young Vote’ will increase awareness of youth voting, encourage dialogue, and inspire us to help ensure high turnout by younger voters in this year’s critical national elections.”
