City Councilor Flynn calls for hearing about Boston police crime lab
A Boston city councilor is calling for answers about why the Boston police crime lab has failed to meet state law regarding testing sexual assault evidence kits.
5 Investigates first exposed the failure in January, revealing that half of the kits received in the most recent fiscal year had not been tested within 30 days, as state law requires.
Councilor Ed Flynn is calling for a hearing to acknowledge it's a problem, and find out what needs to be done to fix it.
“It needs to be a priority,” Flynn told 5 Investigates’ Karen Anderson. “I was disappointed that we aren't meeting the state law.”
The lab missed the deadline on 93 of 186 rape kits submitted last fiscal year. Police cited a staffing shortage for the failure.
“I think we can do better than this,” Flynn said.
Flynn wants to learn more about the process inside the lab.
“Let's ensure this is a top priority for us as city councilors and a city, and provide the respect for survivors of sexual assault, victims of crime, and comply with the law as well,” he said.
Flynn also wants to learn about any equipment upgrades or new methods that would allow the crime lab to perform their work more efficiently.
Boston police did not respond to a request for comment.
