A seven-year-old boy has been killed following a crash between a lorry and car on the M4.
Emergency services, including two air ambulances, rushed to the westbound carriageway between junctions 18 and 19, east of Bristol, at 1pm on Tuesday. The lorry was carrying hay bales when it collided with the small car which had five people inside. Despite their best efforts, the boy died at the scene.
Pictures from the aftermath of the crash show the rear of the car completely dented and smashed up due to the serious impact made during the tragedy. Four other occupants of the car, a silver Volkswagen Polo, were taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries aren't believed to be life-changing or life-threatening. Two of them have been discharged at this time.
Avon and Somerset Police said no one has been arrested at this time. They urged any witnesses to come forward. A spokesperson for the force said: "We were called at 1pm ( March 26) to a report of a collision between a Scania lorry and a VW Polo on the westbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 18 (Bath) and 19 (M32). Despite the best efforts of emergency services, tragically a 7-year-old boy died at the scene. Our thoughts are with his family and they continue to be supported by a specially-trained officer.
"Four other people, who were also in the car, were taken to hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing. Two have since been discharged." They added: "No arrests have been made in connection with the investigation into the collision. We are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
