Georgia man arrested after another man found dead at state park in southern Indiana

A Georgia man was found dead at Clifty Falls State Park on Wednesday. One arrest has been made.

MADISON, Indiana — A Georgia man was arrested after a fatal shooting Wednesday at an Indiana state park left another man from Georgia dead.

At about 2:45 p.m., Indiana Conservation Officers and officers with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and the City of Madison Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the parking lot near the North Gate of Clifty Falls State Park in Madison, Ind.

Officers on scene found a man dead near the parking lot with an apparent gunshot wound to his chest. The man who was shot and killed was identified as 47-year-old Joseph Renee Lane of Carrollton, Georgia.

John Dean McElwaney, 33, of Tallapoosa, Georgia was arrested in connection to the shooting and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. He's charged with voluntary manslaughter (level 2 felony).

Detectives from the DNR Law Enforcement Division, along with officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, are currently leading the investigation.
