BUT A WOMAN LIVING INSIDE THIS BUILDING TELLS US FOUR UNITS SURROUNDING WHERE THE CRANE WENT DOWN ARE NOW UNINHABITABLE. WHILE THE REST OF THE RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN ALLOWED BACK INTO THEIR HOMES. AND THOSE PEOPLE ARE BEING ASKED TO CHECK FOR ANY DAMAGE AND REPORT ANY GAS ODORS. THE CRANE CAME CRASHING DOWN FRIDAY AROUND NOON. THE SEVEN TON PIECE OF EQUIPMENT TOPPLED OVER ONTO THE ROOF, FORCING PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR APARTMENTS. WORK WAS SET TO BE DONE ON THIS APARTMENT BUILDING ON TUESDAY, WHEN THE CRANE WENT DOWN AND IT WENT DOWN HARD. I SAW THE BOOM GO DOWN REAL, YOU KNOW, PRETTY, PRETTY FAST. SO I KNEW IT WASN’T. I KNEW IT WASN’T GOOD. I WAS INSIDE, I WAS I ACTUALLY WORKED FROM HOME AND I HEARD A LOUD THUD. AND THEN YOU CAN ACTUALLY FEEL LIKE THE VIBRATION OF IT, IT ALMOST FELT LIKE AN EARTHQUAKE. OSHA IS INVESTIGATING WHAT CAUSED THIS CRANE TO FALL. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS HURT. AGAIN, RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN ALLOWED BACK INTO THEIR HOMES

Nearly 24 hours after a crane collapsed onto an apartment building in Norwood, Massachusetts, attempts to remove it were finally successful. On Friday, a crane performing construction on the roof of the Eaton Village Apartments collapsed, causing damage to several units. A resident of the apartment complex located just off Bahama Drive, adjacent to Neponset St., said four of the units surrounding where the crane collapsed were uninhabitable. Other residents have been allowed inside of the apartments, and encouraged to look for damage and report any odor of gas they may encounter. Kavita Patel was inside her Norwood apartment when the incident happened around lunchtime on Friday. "I was inside. I was actually work from home and I heard a loud thud," Patel said. "Then, you can actually feel the vibration of it. Almost felt like an earthquake."Neighbors say the crane had been at the apartment complex on and off since the fall, doing work on the roof. Jim Towne is a former crane operator, who was in the area eating lunch, and witnessed the accident. "I saw the boom go down pretty, pretty fast," Towne said. "I knew it wasn't good."Towne said he spoke with the crane operator after the accident. "He said the outrigger let go," Towne said. "I hope he didn't get hurt."A crane outrigger is a beam that extends from the lower parts of a crane to improve its stability.Video from Sky 5 showed an impact on the top of the building. A pile of lumber had apparently slid off the crane onto one of the cars in the parking lot.According to the fire department, firefighters searched the building and helped to evacuate residents before securing the utilities. Five people were evaluated by Norwood Ambulance and one patient declined treatment. A ring of yellow caution tape surrounded the overturned crane and several other nearby vehicles in the parking lot."It is not known if the building will be tenable once removed but the building and wiring inspectors have been called to the scene," fire officials said in a written statement. A spokesperson from the Department of Labor confirmed that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was informed of the incident.
