It’s been an intense year in Hollywood, and the young stars and up-and-coming celebrities trying to forge their own path in the entertainment industry have felt it too. The 2023 SAG and WGA strikes reshaped the industry in ways we’re still discovering, and illuminated the darker aspects of an industry run by immense wealth and influence, where, in the minds of many power players, actors could be replaced by AI versions of themselves, scripts could be written by computers, and individuals should have less agency over their art.
And still, young people continue to enter the entertainment industry, experiencing first brushes of fame and learning about who they are and how to advocate for themselves and others. As SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland writes in an op-ed for Teen Vogue, “What actors were fighting for during the 118-day actors’ strike wasn’t only more pay and better working conditions. They were fighting for future generations of performers."
Teen Vogue’s New Hollywood 2024 honors Maddie Ziegler, Ariana Greenblatt, Keith Powers, Christopher Briney, Aida Osman, Iñaki Godoy, and Megan Suri as the next class of rising stars who deserve your attention.
This portfolio for Teen Vogue's New Hollywood 2024 is about the relationship between the individual and the collective, how each young person on our list brings a singular perspective to what they create in the world, and how that perspective came to be. Our artists in residence include stars of blockbusters, teen heartthrobs, indie standouts, and former child stars. But underneath those monikers, they are real people, prone to missteps as much as success, awkwardness as much as confidence, fear as much as ambition. And they are all becoming more conscious of their growing influence on fans and, on a larger scale, figuring out how they want to wield that power.
Across the seven profiles, you’ll find these performers and celebrities have more in common than not. Osman and Powers both reference Taraji P. Henson’s recent remarks about pay inequality and opportunities for Black creators in Hollywood, and the work of Black women in advocating for solutions. Greenblatt and Godoy express a desire to continue and uplift the recent sea-change in roles available to Latinx actors. Ziegler, Briney, and Suri all share an uneasiness with social media and self-perception in an era when everyone is hyper-visible. And nearly all of the honorees talk in some way about wanting to keep a few things just for themselves, how they don’t want to lose a crucial part of who they are on the road to success.
