There's no exact science to it, so feel free to begin your journey from whichever coast you prefer and add your own stops. Here are the places you shouldn't miss along the way.

Seattle

Before you depart Seattle, which is known for its skyline featuring the iconic Space Needle, swing by Pike Place Market to pick up a coffee from the Storyville Coffee Company and some fresh pastries from Honest Biscuits or The Crumpet Shop. About a 30-minute drive from downtown Seattle, Snoqualmie Falls is a great place to stop for a brief hike, with exceptional views and a stunning 268-foot waterfall. Stay at the Bavarian Inn, about a 40-minute drive from Mount Rushmore National Memorial, one of the most iconic monuments in the U.S. Once you've taken enough photos of the four presidents' impressive 60-foot faces, head into Rapid City for a bite and some local beer at Murphy's Pub & Grill. Minneapolis
