A gas leak at the downtown GOVA transit terminal this morning resulted in a full evacuation of the area, with buses picking up riders from along Cedar Street until it’s resolved.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services Deputy Chief Jesse Oshell told Sudbury.com that at 8:20 a.m. on March 13 a bus struck a gas line, resulting in a leak.

When Sudbury.com was on scene at approximately 8:45 a.m., the scent of gas was still in the air.

“We attended in order to immediately assess the situation,” said Oshell. “The building was being evacuated and we ensured residents and transit riders were away from the scene.”

Oshell said firefighters closed the gas line off and contacted Enbridge to attend.

“The leak’s been isolated,” said Oshell, while Enbridge repairs the damage.

He said part of the transit terminal and an additional laneway were blocked off as a result of the leak. Elm Street between the Elm Place Mall and terminals was also to eastbound traffic for a time.

The transit terminal was closed as a result of the damage, as well, transit riders were catching buses on Cedar Street just beside the terminal. While the terminal still appears to be closed at this time, buses are using the terminal parking lot again and picking up riders there.
