(CNN) - A new report suggests the risk of a cancer-causing chemical in common acne treatments.

According to the report, benzene can form at unacceptably high levels in both prescription and over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide products.

Some products could form more than 800 times the conditionally restricted Food and Drug Administration concentration limit for benzene.

The report is from an independent laboratory called Valisure.

According to Valisure’s report, it found that high levels of benzene can form when benzoyl peroxide products are stored or handled at high temperatures.

Examples include when they are left in a hot car at more than 150 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 14 days.

Valisure sent a citizen petition urging the FDA to “request recalls and a suspension of sales for products containing the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide.”
