Barkley sustained the injury following a collision with Palace defender Joel Ward.

The pair clashed when challenging for the ball but Ward came out unscathed.

Barkley meanwhile was left with a bruised and bloodied nose with his shirt covered in blood.

He was given a cloth to mop up the mess and had to change into a spare, numberless shirt.

Unfortunately for Barkley the match went from bad to worse as Jean-Philippe Mateta poked the hosts in front just a minute after play resumed.

A sloppy Alfie Doughy backpass put Daniel Munoz through on goal and the winger rounded goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

He then unselfishly cut the ball back to Mateta who backheeled the ball into the empty net with a confident finish.

Barkley, 30, has impressed with his performances since joining Luton from Nice in the summer and even has his sights set on a spot in England's Euro 2024 squad this summer.

He has even attracted interest from Manchester United.

United supremo Sir Jim Ratcliffe and sidekick Sir David Brailsford are huge fans of born-again Barkley, and have signed him once already for Nice.
