MONTEVALLO – University of Montevallo men’s basketball head coach Anthony Komara announced the promotion of Alex Mastin to full-time assistant coach on Thursday.

Mastin, a graduate of Auburn University, served as a volunteer assistant at Montevallo during the 2023-24 season and will now enter a full-time role on staff ahead of 2024-25.

“It was a no-brainer to promote Alex to this position,” said Komara. “Alex is the ultimate ‘all-in’ guy. Since the day he got here last fall, he has been relentless in his energy, positivity, and eagerness to learn.

“He is one of the hardest-working recruiters I have been around and is extremely connected in the state of Alabama, which is a very important part of our recruiting efforts here at UM. There is no job too big or too small for Alex, and that is a great recipe for a successful career in this profession.

“Most importantly, he is a high-character individual who positively impacts our student-athletes on a daily basis and helps them grow as people. He has worked extremely hard to earn this opportunity, and I am beyond excited that he is with us.”

Prior to Montevallo, Mastin coached in AAU for Pro One Basketball Club from 2021-23, while also serving as the varsity assistant coach and head junior varsity coach at Albertville High School, his alma mater, during the 2022-23 season.

Mastin’s experience in the high school coaching ranks extended beyond Albertville. From 2015-17, he was the head varsity coach at the Donoho School for two seasons.

While at Auburn as an undergrad, Mastin was a manager for the men’s basketball team from 2011-13.

“I am beyond grateful to the University of Montevallo for giving me this opportunity,” said Mastin.

“When Coach Komara approached me about increasing my role in the program it was a no-brainer for me. Coach Komara is building the foundation of a championship-level basketball program, and I am humbled to be a part of this journey. Go Falcons!”
