A former Humboldt Middle School teacher is accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage student.According to a release from the Humboldt County Sheriff, 31-year-old Samantha Meyer-Davis, of Rutland, has been charged with one count of third-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony, and one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee, a Class D felony.An investigation began in September 2023 after the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office was made aware of allegations of a sexual relationship between Meyer-Davis and a Humboldt High School student. In October, the agency requested assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation."When the district was first notified by law enforcement about the allegations related to Samantha Davis it immediately placed Ms. Davis on administrative leave and began its own investigation in accordance with district policy, Humboldt Superintendent Jim Murray said in a statement. "The district has fully cooperated with law enforcement throughout its investigation and will continue to do so as student safety is the district's No. 1 priority."According to the minutes of the Humboldt school board, Meyer-Davis resigned from her position with the school district on Dec. 6, 2023.According to the criminal complaint, between June 2022 and Nov. 1, 2023, Meyer-Davis was allegedly in a sexual relationship with a student under the age of 16. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office says the student was 14 when the relationship began.The relationship included kissing, sex acts, videos, instant messages, text messages and personal contact, the criminal complaint says.A search warrant was executed at Meyer-Davis' residence and her classroom at Humboldt Middle School. Love letters from the underage student were found in the classroom. Digital evidence of the relationship was also recovered.Meyer-Davis turned herself into the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office on Monday morning. She has been released on $15,000 cash bond and has a court date at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
