Linwood Jerald, who retired last June as the athletics director at Parkland, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association during its upcoming meeting in Asheville March 16-19.
Jerald was Parkland’s athletics director from 2014 through 2023. He also served as the athletics director at Atkins from 2008-2013 and twice at High Point Andrews (2007-08 and 2013-14).
Andrews won the NCHSAA 2-A state football championship in 2013 and its girls basketball team won the 2-A state title in 2014.
The indoor and outdoor girls track and field teams at Parkland won state championships in 2014-15.
As a coach, Jerald was the defensive coordinator for the 2001 3-A state football champions at Carver.
Jerald graduated from Parkland in 1971. He has spent more than 50 years in athletics in coaching or administration in high school and college, including a stint on the staff of Bill Hayes at Winston-Salem State and North Carolina A&T.

Jerald received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine last May, which is “presented to honor persons who have a proven record of service in the state of North Carolina or some other special achievement, and to others as a gesture of friendship and good will.”
Jerald has also been recognized with the following awards throughout his distinguished career:
2016: Homer Thompson “Eight Who Make a Difference” Award by the NCHSAA
2020: Charlie Adams Distinguished Service Award by the NCHSAA
2021: Athletic Director of Excellence by the NCADA.
Jerald was inducted into the C.E. “Big House Gaines” Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
Antwan Hughes Jr. takes second at New Balance Indoor Nationals
Parkland’s Antwan Hughes Jr. finished second in the 60 meters at the New Balance Indoor Nationals last weekend in Boston.
Hughes clocked a time of 6.65 seconds in the second round, which is the second-fastest time for that distance in North Carolina history.
He ran a 6.69 in the final.
Mount Tabor, Reagan athletes excel at Nike Indoor Nationals
Several track athletes from Mount Tabor and Reagan had good showings at the Nike Indoor Nationals last weekend at the Armory in New York City.
Andrew Riley finished third in the Emerging Elite Division of the 800 meters and also ran legs on the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams that also finished fourth.
The 4x400 team of Riley, Rance Springs, Jordan Wolverton and Ezra Blair set a new school record, finishing in 3 minutes, 22.65 seconds.
Bryce James, Blake Simmons, Springs and Riley made up the 4x400 relay team.
Ashley Casas of Reagan won the Emerging Elite division of the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 5 inches.
Reagan’s 4x400 relay team of Kate Henderson, Alexis Vaughan, Carmealla Marino and Bailey Hugg finished fourth in the 4x200 relay, and Vaughan, Marino, Huff and Marley Ingram also finished fourth in the 4x400.
The Raiders’ Blake Farmer placed fifth in the race walk.
Former Mount Tabor sprinter Terrell Robinson wins DII National Championship
Terrell Robinson, a 2022 graduate of Mount Tabor who attends Saint Augustine University, captured the NCAA Division II National Championship in the 60 meters last weekend with a time of 6.61 seconds.
He was recently named the CIAA Male Track Athlete of the Year at the indoor conference meet
Robinson won the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the NCHSAA 4-A outdoor track state championships for the Spartans in 2022. He set a meet record for the 100, finishing in 10.31 seconds.
West Stokes seeks teams for first Dan Spainhour Classic
West Stokes will play host to the first Dan Spainhour Classic boys basketball tournament that will be held Dec. 20, 21 and 23 at the school.
The Wildcats are seeking seven additional teams to round out the field and will offer a three-game guarantee.
Spainhour, who retired from West Stokes after the 2019-20 season, was the first coach and athletics director for West Stokes when the school opened in 1999. He spent four seasons in his initial stint, left to join the coaching staff of Leonard Hamilton at Florida State, but returned to King in 2007 for his second stint on the sidelines.
He has a career record of 483-253 in 26 seasons as a head coach in high school that includes stops at West Stokes, East Burke, and Bishop McGuinness.
Spainhour won 308 games as coach of the Wildcats.
