CAMILLA, Ga. (WALB) - A Camilla native celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, something we all hope to achieve one day.

Frances Styles has witnessed and worked through a lot in the city of Camilla and our country’s history.

The Mitchell County native mainly worked as a nursing home caregiver for most of her life, but also paved the way for future generations with her activism during the Civil Rights Movement.

“Appreciate them coming and thank them for everything they did for me and for helping me enjoy my 100th birthday,” said Frances Styles.

“It’s a blessing to make it to 100 years old. A lot of people don’t see that. Because my parents and my mom died at an early age, as well as my dad. So, to see her make it to 100 years old is a blessing from God,” said Lawson Hampton Jr., Syles’ grandson.

Saturday, March 16, was officially named Ms. Frances Styles Day by the Mayor Pro Tem of Camilla. Several other elected officials presented Ms. Styles with a proclamation to honor her work and sacrifices to her community and country.

“Very emotional because as a person who has gone through the Great Depression, the civil rights movement, and other milestone events in our country. So, for her to be able to do what she did working in cotton fields, pecans grow. She paved the way for her family and for others of us to be where we are today,” said Kenneth Cutts, chief of staff for Congressman Sanford Bishop.

“She has been a big contributor to this community. She has worked in this community practically all her life, so it’s quite a momentous moment at this time,” said City of Camilla Mayor Pro Tem Dewayne Burley.

Happy birthday, Ms. Frances Styles!
