High tides, wind and rainy weather are affecting coastal areas
The latest from Natural Resources Wales:
Number of alerts reduced
The number of flood warnings and flood alerts has been reduced dramatically.
There are now three flood alerts in place:
- Coast from Aberthaw to Severn Bridge
- Usk Estuary
- Wye Estuary in Monmouthshire.
How to follow the flood warnings
We are currently in a period of the third highest spring tides of the year but Natural Resources Wales say that it is looking like a 'low likelihood' for any major flooding although there are some flood alerts/warnings in place in some areas.
Their website is updated every 15 minutes so will always have the most up to date alerts/warnings. You can follow it here.
Hundreds watch biggest Severn Bore of the year
Hundreds of spectators lined the riverbank and bridges this morning to catch a glimpse of the first and only five-star Severn Bore of the year, while dozens of surfers and paddleboarders attempted to ride the wave.
The Severn Estuary receives the second highest tide anywhere in the world and the difference between the lowest and highest tides in one day can be more than 14.5 metres (47 feet).
These high or spring tides occur on several days in each lunar cycle throughout the spring and autumn.
Flooding in Cardiff Bay
This is scene at Adventurers Quay in Cardiff Bay with both pavements on either side of the Quay flooded.
There is a flood alert in the Cardiff area that will remain in place until Wednesday evening. Natural Resources Wales says: "Due to the predicted levels for the next high tides, this alert will remain in force until at least Wednesday evening's high tide"
Severn Bore 2024 in pictures
The only five-star Severn Bore of 2024 went through parts of south Wales this morning. It's a natural phenomenon that attracts huge interest from around the UK and indeed the world.
Described as “the greatest ride on earth", four star bores are also scheduled this week but five star bores are the one's crowds flock to see. It means that kayakers, surfers and bore enthusiasts have returned to the banks of the River Severn for the yearly spectacle. It wasn't as spectacular as hoped but that didn't stop these surfers.
Flooding affecting Newport bus services
There is also flooding in Newport.
Newport Bus are warning: "Due to flooding at Docks way railway underpass the road is closed. Service 35 will have to divert via Mon Bank, and 36 via Cardiff road, until further notice."
Main Bristol road is flooded
It is not just in Wales, one of the main roads in Bristol is closed following flooding. The Portway is shut in both directions, near the Clifton Suspension Bridge, with emergency services on the scene this morning.
A flood alert for Tidal River Avon at Bristol, Pill and Shirehampton had been issued by the Environment Agency. Locks and flood gates have been closed in the area. Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.
Warning of danger to people
It is a spectacular site but Natural Rescources Wales are warning people to be very careful around coastal areas and rivers.
A statement from the agency said: "Be careful on beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths, roads, low lying land and estuaries. Be careful as sea spray and waves could be dangerous and could contain debris."
