In the age of technology, there is still room for bookstores.

Barnes & Noble announced it is opening a new store in Meriden at 9 a.m. on March 20. It is located in the Townline Square Annex at 533 South Broad St.

The grand opening will feature internationally bestselling author Liv Constantine cutting the ribbon and signing copies of her books.

The store has a modern design and sells books, toys, games and gifts.

“Meriden has been without a bookstore selling new books since the much loved Borders bookstore closed in 2011,” said James Daunt, CEO of Barnes & Noble. “Thank you to everyone in Meriden who has written asking us to open a bookstore. The positive feedback we have received since announcing our new bookstore has been wonderful.”

Barnes & Noble said it is seeing “tremendous growth” through its strategy of handing control of each bookstore to local booksellers.

“As a longtime bookseller, I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of bringing Barnes & Noble to Meriden,” said Amy Black, manager of the Meriden store. “Our booksellers have been hard at work curating our selection for this community, and we can’t wait to welcome readers into their new Meriden Barnes & Noble.”

In the announcement, Barnes & Noble said it is seeing strong sales and is opening new stores after more than 15 years of declining numbers.

In 2024, Barnes & Noble expects to open more than 50 new bookstores.
