Arkansas State baseball (13-11, 1-3 SBC) failed to gather any momentum during a 6-2 loss against Marshall (7-14, 1-3 SBC) on Friday night at Jack Cook Field.

Jelle van der Lelie (2-2) made his sixth start of the season, surrendering six earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two over 4.0 innings pitched. Three batters recorded multi-hit performances for the Red Wolves while Brayden Caskey led the way with a home run in the contest.

Marshall took the lead in the first when Gio Ferraro launched a two-run shot over the left-field wall. In the next inning, Owen Ayers found a gap in the right side for an RBI-single, giving the Thundering Herd a 3-0 advantage.

After recording two early outs in the fourth, Marshall loaded the bases and brought in a run following a balk by van der Lelie. Elijah Vogelsong cleared the remaining runners with a triple down the right-field line as A-State trailed by six runs.

Caskey put the Red Wolves on the board with a solo-shot to left field during the sixth inning. The Scarlet and Black would get one more run in the ninth, but it would not be enough as they dropped the series opener by four runs.

Drew Harlow (3-3) earned the win while van der Lelie took the loss.
