Arkansas man sentenced in 2020 murder
A judge sentenced Steven Rice, 24, to 30 years in prison Wednesday, after a jury found him guilty of 1st-degree murder in a 2020 killing. Rice was sentenced to an additional 6 years for tampering with evidence.
Rice was charged with murdering Mario Miller, 47, in Fayetteville in August 2020.
Although the jury found Rice guilty of 1st-degree murder and tampering with evidence, he was acquitted of capital murder.
Rice's attorneys said that he killed Miller, but that he should be found guilty only of 1st degree murder, not capital murder.
They said that his close friend, Keishayla Hill, told Rice that Miller had raped her.
Hill, who is also accused in the killing, testified in court that Rice killed Miller at her direction. She made a deal for a reduced sentence in the case in exchange for her testimony.
She said that after Rice shot Miller, she pawned the gun. A detective testified that he located the gun and that the crime lab confirmed it had Miller's blood on it.
The jury deliberated for part of Wednesday afternoon after a two-day trial. Rice had no reaction when the judge read the verdict.
