City Attorney Stephanie Bonney announced before City Council that due to health reasons, Fruitland's mayor, who had served in the role since 2018, had decided to resign, effective immediately. Howell was not present at the April 8 meeting, according to city documents.

Council President Kari Peterson will act as mayor while City Council deliberates on who will be appointed to serve as the interim mayor until next year's election, according to Bonney.

Meeting records documented that the council voted to postpone the appointment of Howell's successor to a later, undetermined date "to allow time for considerations."

Specific health issues prompting Howell's resignation were not disclosed to KTVB.

Fruitland's next general election and mayoral appointment is in November of 2025.
