SHENANDOAH, Va. — On Wednesday, Shenandoah National Park reopened several trails following days of battling the Rocky Branch fire.
As of 3 p.m., Shenandoah National Park has reopened Byrds Nest 4 Shelter, all trails, and has lifted the parkwide fire ban. The ban prohibited all open-air fires including wood fire, charcoal fire, wood-burning camp stoves, charcoal grills, gas and propane cooking stoves.
On Wednesday, March 20, a fire sparked near the park and in the following days winds spread that fire into the park boundaries. According to the National Park Service, the Rocky Branch fire covered 3,400 acres across Page County, including a portion of Shenandoah National Park.
The Appalachian Trail from Elkwallow to Beahms Gap, Rocky Branch, Neighbor Mountain, Jeremys Run, Hull School Trail from Skyline Drive to Thornton River Upper Trail and Thornton River Upper Trail have all reopened.
