ROANOKE — Marvin R. Braker, 80, of Roanoke, IL, passed away on March 14, 2024, at the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke.
Marvin was born on April 10, 1943 in Liberal, MO to Ben S. and Clara (Meiss) Braker. He married Michaleen Styner on December 26, 1965, in Joplin, MO. She survives.
Also surviving are his children: Kevin (Janice) Braker, Karel (Nate) Hoffman, Michelle (Michael) Murphy; four brothers: Donald (Eileen) Braker, Jim (Marge) Braker, Glen (Audrey) Braker, Morris Braker; three sisters: Lois Phipps, Betty (Joe) Vaughan, Jane Hilton; sister-in-law, Martha Braker; nine grandchildren: Jon Braker, Jake Braker, Kelly Braker, Nick (Natalie) Hoffman, Kayla Hoffman, Austin Murphy, Brandon Murphy, Tyler Murphy, Peighton Murphy; and two great-grandchildren, Marvin Jay and T.J.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harland Braker.
Marvin owned and operated the local Ace Hardware store in Roanoke from 1979 to the early 2000s. He was known as a "handyman" and was always happy and helpful assisting others with their basic maintenance needs. He retired as maintenance man for Apostolic Christian LifePoints (Home for the Handicapped) in Morton.
Marvin was active in every community that he lived in. His gentle spirit and kind heart was evident in his desire to serve others. He volunteered on the local fire department and served as Chief while living in Indiana. He volunteered on the Roanoke Ambulance squad for over 30 years, serving as its chief for 20 of those year. He also was Santa Claus for many years, bringing smile and joy to children during the holidays.
He was a member of the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Church where he had served as Sunday School teacher for many years.
Funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday March 18, 2024, at the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Church. Church ministers will officiate. Visitation was from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke and from 9:00 - 9:45 a.m. on Monday prior to the services at the church. Burial followed at Roanoke Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Roanoke, IL.
