One of the most photographed homes in Maine, which has been dubbed as the 'wedding cake' house, is for sale for $2.65 million and boasts its very own gothic trim and stunning vintage touches. 

The famous property is located in Kennebunk, Maine, which is just a town away from Kennebunkport, which has an intense amount of history attached to it and was even home to the summer residences of John F. Kennedy, and George H.W. Bush. 

Now, the yellow home, which is frosted with a gothic-style white trim, and features tall tower-like peaks, has gone on the market for the first time in 10 years after the owners were denied permission from transforming it into a wedding venue. 

The two-story home, which was built in 1825, is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places so that future owners can have a slice of the past once they walk inside.

The listing agent revealed that the homeowners, Hunt and Katie Edwards have lived in the house seasonally since 2014, however are ready to spend more time in Florida and believe the home needs too many repairs. 

Prior to selling the home, to bring in money for all the repairs needed, the couple applied for the home to host weddings, events, and even possibly turn it into an inn. 

However, the proposal was declined earlier this year by the town's board after locals claimed they were worried about possible noise. The beautiful home dates back to 1825, when George Washington Bourne built the Federal style home. 

However, when a fired destroyed the barn in 1852, Bourne opted to add stunning touches inspired by Italy's Milan Cathedral. 

It became known as the Wedding Cake House in the early 1990s when a postcard maker invented a story about the property. 

According to the postcard maker, a sailor was called to sea on the night of his wedding and was no longer able to attend his wedding.

So, during his time away, he carved the trim for the home and gave it to his wife as 'the icing for her cake.' And while the story 'sold many postcards,' it's completely 'fictious', according to historians. 

Fast-forward over 100 years, the home has become one of the most photographed areas in the world and sees a flood of visitors snapping pictures of it. 

Laura Dolce, executive director of the local chamber of commerce, told Spectrum News that the future owner has to be ready to restore the property. 

'That house has had so much mystique around it. There’s that romanticism to it so it means a lot to the residents and it means a lot to the visitors,' she said. 

She noted that in the past 20 years, the home has only been open to the public once. 

'People always want to see the inside of that house. People have such curiosity about it so I would love to see there be a way, whether it’s annual tours, fundraising. There’s just always going to be that curiosity,' she added.
