Police respond to street takeovers, car meetups in Austin Saturday

The first takeover happened on East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Pershing Lane at 4 p.m.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a number of street takeovers in Austin on Saturday.

According to APD Watch Command, the first occurred at around 4 p.m., when officers responded to calls of around 50 cars swaying in and out of lanes on East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Pershing Drive.

Police sectioned off the area and declared it an "unlawful assembly." The crowd began to disperse a little over an hour later after APD threatened to use a chemical deterrent.

A separate car meetup was reported shortly thereafter at Capital Plaza, near Interstate 35 and Cameron Road. APD responded and it dispersed quickly after if formed.

Later on Saturday, another meetup occurred at East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Airport Boulevard at around 9 p.m., causing brief road closures in the area.
