Folks in Central Georgia share concerns with the 13WMAZ Listening Lab at the Perry Dogwood Festival

13WMAZ went to the Dogwood Festival in Perry to talk with folks about what they want to see in the upcoming local and presidential election.

PERRY, Ga. — It was a beautiful, sunny day to shop and support local businesses in Perry during the Dogwood Festival.

13WMAZ was out there with the Listening Lab to hear from folks about what they want to see in the upcoming election.

Peggy Davis says she came out to enjoy what the Dogwood Festival had to offer when she saw the Listening Lab. She says she wants the city to remember the 1969 Houston High Indians football team.

"The city put a little small sign there saying that it was a state champion from 69 but they're not willing to work on it to fix it up or give a monument to a historical landmark," Davis said.

The 1969 football champs was an all-black school that went on to win the state championship. The school was desegregated the next school year. Davis says she feels like their history is going down the drain and wants the city to take more interest in the Black neighborhood in Perry.

"Our old school was torn down but my thing now is I know progress has to take place but still we need to do something to upgrade our people and our people in Perry as well."

Kim Barbee from Lizella wants the county to focus on the kids during the summer season and questions what the county will be doing about it.

"We have to go to Forsyth, Perry, Warner Robins, or Centerville to take like our grandkids and children to get in the water when they don't have access to a swimming pool," Barbee said.

Barbee says Macon-Bibb leadership is great but it needs to be addressed because this impacts multiple families. She hopes the county parks and recreation will open them for the summer.

Inflation and the economy were two issues she wrote down in her survey that the government needs to address. She says the streets in South Bibb need to be fixed as well.

"Potholes and all, real bad in South Bibb and Heath Road and Lamar Road. Those are roads we travel a lot."

Barbee says she also noticed crime in the county has been more frequent and hopes there will be a discussion to fix this.

13WMAZ was able to collect over 100 surveys from this event. Your answers will be sent to local leaders in your county so they can be addressed.

The next and final 13WMAZ Listening Lab is May 4th at the International City Experience in Warner Robins.
