March 28, 1924: While there are not as many complaints as there used to be, yet there is considerable jaywalking in Bloomington — so say the police officers on the business district beat. However, jaywalking is not against the law in Illinois, according to a recent Supreme Court ruling which held that pedestrians had the right to cross a street whenever and wherever they pleased.
75 years ago
March 28, 1949: For the first time in village history, Deer Creek has motorized firefighting equipment. A gift of $1,000 by the men's club last fall enabled the village to purchase a used fire truck from the city of Nokomis. The volunteer department of 24 members has been organized to protect the village; a firemen's ball is planned April 22 at Mackinaw Dells to raise money for raincoats, hats, boots and other badly needed gear.

March 28, 1974: Steak n" Shake Inc., 1700 W. Washington, obtained a building permit for a new $550,000 commissary on the West Washington Street site. Steak n' Shake was founded in Normal in 1934 by A. H. "Gus" Belt. He died in 1954.

March 28, 1999: The University High School chess team won first place in the Illinois High School Association state chess championship held this weekend at Illinois State University's Bone Student Center. Coached by Garrett Scott, the team took first out of 98 schools with six wins and a tie, beating Evanston in the final match.
