Patrick Miles was elected to a second term as chair of the Dane County Board of Supervisors at the board’s organizational meeting Tuesday, beating out two other nominees.
Miles, of the McFarland-area 34th District, beat Rick Rose, of the Far East Side Madison 16th District, and April Kigeya, of the Far West Side Madison 15th District. He received 25 votes, Rose received nine and Kigeya received two.
“I’m proud of the service I’ve provided as chair over these last two years,” he said, noting that during his time the board transitioned back into meeting in person after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said that his first term as chair was a learning experience and that among the things he could improve on is communicating with his fellow board members.
“That’s one thing that I will endeavor to do better is to make sure that I pause, make sure that folks are informed,” he said.
Miles is among the longest-serving board members, having joined the board in 2006. Rose and Kigeya are both in their second two-year terms on the board.
Sarah Smith, of the Monona-area 24th District, was elected first vice chair and was the only nominee for that position.
Because the county’s longtime executive, Joe Parisi, is retiring next month, Miles will serve in that position until a permanent replacement is chosen during a special election in November.
Four people are currently running for county executive: County Sup. Dana Pellebon, state Sen. Melissa Agard, Dane County Equity and Inclusion Director Wes Sparkman and West Side Madison Ald. Regina Vidaver. An Aug. 13 primary will narrow that field down to two who will face off in the Nov. 5 election.
The position would then be on the ballot again in April 2025, when Parisi’s four-year term would have ended.
