Goats and sheep can be a profitable addition to any local farm operation, however, it may not be easy to know where to start when it comes to topics like breed selection and how to properly raise these animals. The Muscatine County Extension Office wants to help.
On May 9 at 6 p.m., the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Muscatine County will be hosting its "Small Ruminant: Starting Your Flock," webinar, as part of its Small Farm and Beginning Farmer Webinar Series. This is a free course and is open to all.
This latest webinar will be led by Carolyn Ihde, ISU Extension and Outreach and University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension small ruminant specialist, who will provide essential insights to all guests on how they can get their latest farm expansion off on the right foot.
Some of the topics that will be discussed during the webinar is breed selection, flock management, flock nutrition, raising, and selling meat animals. There also will be a second webinar in August that residents can take to discuss flock breeding management further.
The Muscatine County Extension Office hopes to use this series of courses to introduce residents to a variety of crucial farm management and farming-related topics such as understanding tax exemptions, selling at the farmer’s market, livestock management and private well stewardship.
