Former Buckeye teacher indicted for alleged sexual misconduct with 15-year-old student

BUCKEYE, AZ (AZFamily) — A Maricopa County grand jury has indicted a former Buckeye teacher and coach accused of having sex with an underage student, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced on Monday morning.

Alyssa Paige Todd, 23, was indicted late last month on six counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, and one count of aggravated luring of a minor, all felony charges.

“It is extremely concerning to me that teachers, who are in a position of power and trust, are manipulating and taking advantage of students,” said county attorney Rachel Mitchell in a prepared statement. “I commend our prosecutors and the Buckeye Police Department for their work in ensuring this defendant is held accountable.”

Authorities say on Mar. 16, Todd’s husband called police, suspecting “inappropriate contact” between Todd and a 15-year-old boy at Odyssey Institute for Advanced and International Studies High School where Todd was a teacher and athletic coach.

In arresting documents, Todd’s husband purportedly found handwritten notes in a bedroom dresser and noted that the letters were “sexual in nature.” He also reportedly found more messages on Todd’s laptop that suggested a sexual relationship was taking place.

Trial for Todd is set for July 2024.

This marks the second similar investigation at Odyssey Institute for Advanced and International Studies High School in less than a year. Last September, a former teacher was arrested following a months-long investigation about an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student.
