Gary Wayne Twedell of Minneapolis, MN, passed away unexpectedly in early March of 2024.

Born on December 23, 1954, in Grand Forks, ND, he attended Wilder Elementary, Valley Junior High, and Central High School (Class of 1973) before earning a degree from the University of  North Dakota in natural science and another one in physics and mathematics.

Besides being involved in biochemistry research projects while at UND, Gary was cited in professional publications for his contributions on behalf of work at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Lab and the Idaho National Lab for Nuclear Research. He not only presented such findings at major scientific conferences but also was consulted by various entities for his expertise on the subject of nuclear energy and nuclear waste management.

His family knew Gary as a son and brother who had a wonderful sense of humor. He excelled at devising practical jokes. Growing up in Grand Forks’ Riverside Park neighborhood, he took advantage of recreational opportunities to be found there, particularly playing hockey with his agemates. Even as an adult, he was known to participate in late-night games of such a nature. He often could be seen taking his beloved Black Lab, Hercules, for a walk down in the park or on the banks of the Red River.

Gary was an avid reader, who was fortunate to live so close to the library at the University of Minnesota where he was a donor. He was also a master craftsman, who built (among other things) a magnificent foosball table. At one time he was nationally ranked for small firearms competition, enjoyed trap shooting, and loved to go hunting, fishing, and camping. Moreover, he earned a black belt in karate. An adventurer, he traveled around the American West on his motorcycle and Northern Europe on a 10-speed bicycle. Gary was very proud of his Datsun 240Z sports car and kept it in top condition for cruising through the mountains of Idaho, of which he was especially fond.

Gary is survived by his brother Lester R. Twedell, Jr. of Riverside, CA, his sister Jo Ann (Ed) Russell of Great Falls, MT, and his niece Libby (Tim) McGuire of Durango, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester R. Twedell, Sr. and Alma W. Twedell, his sister Jerri Lee, nieces Jodi and Jena,  and nephew Justin.

Per Gary’s request no formal service will be held.

Amundson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
