A squirrel may have been a factor in a solar panel fire at a Far East Side home on Monday, authorities reported.
At around 2:45 p.m. Monday, smoke and flames were reported coming from the solar panel on the roof of the Cape Cod style wood-framed home in the 7100 block Littlemore Drive, Madison Fire Department spokesperson Cynthia Schuster said in a statement.
Firefighters shut off the power to the solar panels and quickly extinguished the blaze, which was confined to the solar panel and some asphalt shingles, Schuster said.

MGE and the solar company also responded to the home, Schuster said.
The cause was determined to be the radiant heat of the solar panel and a contributing factor may have been a squirrel that firefighters saw run from under the panel when they were fighting the fire, Schuster said.
No injuries were reported.
