FLORENCE, AZ (AZFamily) — The town of Florence is experiencing some growing pains as more development comes to the area.

Just within March, town officials say residents’ water was shut off without notice three times. “Each time we’ve had to leave town because of what is going on and it’s just been a hardship for us,” said resident Virginia Rivera.

Officials say there have been 21 water outages over the last year, the most recent one triggered by an accident on a construction site.

“We just don’t want this happening and the construction is just coming and coming and that’s what is causing all of this,” said resident Courtney Ramirez.

These water outages are not only impacting residents but also local businesses.

“Whenever there’s a water outage, as a restaurant you can’t operate. You can’t wash your hands, flush your toilet, or wash dishes so you have to close,” said Lester Curry, owner of Loft and Pantry.

A big issue is aging infrastructure and old pipes. To resolve this, the town officials say they are allocating $600,000 biannually to address undersized water lines and infrastructure.

They also said that after the most recent outage, they requested contractors use metal detectors to find any possible hidden valves.
