Methodology

We rated the largest internet providers in the U.S. for 2024. Each provider was rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on over a dozen factors, including speed, cost, availability, fees, customer satisfaction, connection type and more. We also used data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to compare the average speed offered by internet companies in the U.S. to set a baseline for what is considered a good internet speed. Additionally, we analyzed data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) to understand how each internet service provider (ISP) fares in customer service and perceived value.

How to choose an internet provider in Sacramento

The first step in choosing a Sacramento internet plan is finding out which providers cover your address by selecting “view all plans” on this page. You can also edit to enter your exact address for more accuracy.

Sacramento has several high-speed options from national and local providers. According to the FCC, over 80% of the area can get up to 1,000 Mbps internet, which is double the national average for availability at that speed. While California has an average internet speed of 93 Mbps, 100% of Sacramento has access to speeds of 100 Mbps.

Next, determine your desired price range and internet speed. Generally, households with less than 10 devices connected at once are fine with 100 to 300 Mbps. However, if you will have multiple devices streaming or more than 10 devices online simultaneously, such as in competitive gaming, a speed of 1 GB or more Mbps could be a better fit. Fortunately, most Sacramento internet providers offer no-contract plans, which means you can always upgrade or downgrade if needed.’

Sacramento internet provider reviews

Read on for a more in-depth summary of the top Sacramento internet companies, including which have fees, term lengths and data caps.

Xfinity – Most available internet

Overall score: 3.9 out of 5.

Read our full Xfinity review.

Xfinity is the most available internet service provider (ISP) in Sacramento. The cable internet provider offers plans at various speeds between 75 and 800 Mbps and also offers symmetrical fiber speeds of 1 GB and above, depending on your location. Xfinity internet can handle multiple devices and support gaming, streaming and video conferencing.

Consider how many devices are connected in your home at once when deciding on the speed you need. Most Xfinity plans have a 24-month price guarantee and free equipment for 12 months, except for the cheapest 75 Mbps plan. Xfinity also has prepaid internet to purchase in seven or 30-day increments.

AT&T – Fastest speeds

Overall score: 4.1 out of 5.

Read our full AT&T review.

AT&T Fiber has speeds from 300 to 5,000 Mbps, or 5 GB. A home internet speed of 2 GB and above is excessive for the average user, so don’t pay for more than you need. However, the ultra-connected household with 20 devices or more running concurrently can use the internet with virtually no slowdowns on these unlimited, no-contract fiber plans. Deals from AT&T can also include free installation and equipment, plus gift cards and other perks for new customers.

T-Mobile – Most available 5G service

Overall score: 4.1 out of 5.

Read our full T-Mobile review.

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is known for simple pricing. Get unlimited, no-contract internet up to 245 Mbps for $60/mo. This fixed wireless service uses fifth-generation, or 5G, technology to deliver Wi-Fi without running any lines to your home. 5G speeds aren’t as fast or reliable as fiber or cable internet. However, T-Mobile is rated high in customer satisfaction by the ACSI, and you can bundle home internet with a wireless plan for a discount. T-Mobile also offers prepaid internet plans.

Verizon 5G – Cheap internet and wireless bundles

Overall score: 4 out of 5.

Read our full Verizon 5G review.

Verizon 5G has two home Wi-Fi plans, up to 300 Mbps or 1 GB. Both plans are available as standalone internet for $60 or $80, respectively, or you can bundle with a qualifying Verizon Wireless plan for a discount. Internet setup and equipment are free, service is unlimited and there are no contracts. Verizon also offers rotating perks for new customers, including gift cards and other offers. Internet speeds can fluctuate based on how busy the network is, which can be frustrating for streamers or gamers.

Fidium – Good fiber deals

Fidium is a fiber provider under the parent company Consolidated Communications, Inc., providing unlimited residential and business internet to about 20% of the Sacramento region. Primary coverage areas include Land Park, Curtis Park, East Sacramento, Arden-Arcade, Woodlake, Northgate and Gateway West.

The four internet plans are 100 Mbps for $25/mo.; $300 for $35/mo.; 1 GB for $55/mo.; and 2 GB for $75/mo. Prices are guaranteed for 12 months, then increase by $20/mo. Fidium offers lower introductory rates than other fiber plans in the area, plus free installation and a free Wi-Fi gateway.

Succeed.Net – Good for rural areas

Succeed.Net is a fixed wireless provider covering about 20% of the suburban and rural Sacramento region. Primary coverage is in the areas to the northwest of downtown Sacramento, including Colusa, Williams, Meridian, Grimes, Robbins and Dunnigan. Coverage also extends to the east of downtown in and around Rancho Cordova.

Succeed.Net has five plans, all with no contracts and free installation: 10 Mbps for $50/mo.; 12 Mbps for $60/mo.; 25 Mbps for $80/mo.; 50 Mbps for $100/mo.; and 75 Mbps for $130/mo. All plans except the 10 Mbps plan have unlimited data and a 12-month price guarantee. A Wi-Fi router is an additional $10/mo. or you can provide your own to skip the charge.

Cheap internet in Sacramento

Cheap internet in Sacramento starts at $19.99/mo. with Xfinity’s 75 Mbps plan. The price is guaranteed for 12 months, after which the standard rate is $67/mo. Xfinity’s xFi Gateway costs $15/mo., so the actual price is closer to $35/mo. unless you provide your own modem and router. A better value is the Connect More plan, which starts at $30/mo. and has a 24-month price guarantee and free equipment for the first 12 months.

Conversely, Fidium and T-Mobile provide equipment at no extra charge. Another way to get cheap internet is to bundle Verizon 5G or T-Mobile 5G plans with a qualifying wireless plan to get a monthly discount.

Sacramento internet technologies

Sacramento residents have several fiber internet options from various providers, as well as cable, 5G and DSL connections. Satellite and fixed wireless technologies provide Wi-Fi in rural areas around the city. Find out more about the pros, cons and availability of different types of broadband in Sacramento.

  • Fiber internet: Available in 46% of Sacramento. Market competition in the Sacramento area allows for multiple fiber plan options at reasonable prices. Fiber speeds of 1 GB or less are enough for the average household to connect multiple streaming and gaming devices.
  • Cable internet: Available in 99% of Sacramento. Cable internet in Sacramento is provided solely by Xfinity. This connection type is fast but can slow down during nights and weekends due to network congestion. Still, cable internet can easily support all common internet activities.
  • 5G and fixed wireless internet: Available in 80% of Sacramento. 5G and fixed wireless plans use radio towers to send Wi-Fi to surrounding homes. This type of connection is typically easy to self-install. Speeds can fluctuate more than other connection types because available bandwidth depends on how many people are online in your area.
  • Satellite: Available in 100% of Sacramento. Satellite providers include Hughesnet, Starlink and Viasat. This technology is good for rural areas with few other Wi-Fi options. It has speed and data limitations, and setup fees can be pricey.
  • DSL: Available in 48% of Sacramento. DSL uses copper phone lines, but you do not need active home phone service for it to work. DSL is a dedicated line unaffected by network congestion. Maximum DSL speeds are 100 Mbps, fast enough for gaming and streaming, but connecting too many Wi-Fi devices in your home could cause lag time.
