Step into the enchanting world of “Daddy Long Legs” at the Covey Center in Provo, where every note sung and every step danced tells a story of love, ambition and self-discovery. As an avid theater enthusiast, I had the pleasure of experiencing this captivating musical firsthand, and it left an indelible mark on my heart.

Playing in the intimate Black Box theater, from the moment the performance began, the audience was transported to turn-of-the-century New England, where the charming Jerusha Abbott embarks on a life-changing journey thanks to the generosity of her mysterious benefactor, who she affectionately dubs “Daddy Long Legs.” The chemistry between the two leads was charming, drawing the audience into their ever-evolving relationship with each passing scene.

The Covey Center provided an intimate setting that perfectly complemented the intimate nature of the story, allowing the audience to feel fully immersed in Jerusha’s world. The set design was simple yet effective, effortlessly transitioning between various locations and enhancing the storytelling without overshadowing the performances.

What truly set this production apart was the stellar cast, whose exceptional talents brought the characters to life in the most mesmerizing way. Their voices soared through the theater, carrying the emotional weight of the story with every note. The actors’ nuanced performances captured the essence of each character, from Jerusha’s wide-eyed innocence to Daddy Long Legs’ hidden vulnerability. Dylann Riggs, who portrayed Jerusha Abbott, did an outstanding job in her performance. She quickly wins the hearts of the crowd as she is able to portray the excitement of a young schoolgirl who grows into a college graduate. Riggs did a great job of immersing the crowd in the story of Jerusha. Likewise, Scott Hendrickson, who plays the part of Daddy Long Legs, was able to home in the charm and wowed the crowd with his incredible vocals. Together, both actors are a perfect match for their respective roles.

The musical numbers were executed wonderfully, blending seamlessly with the narrative to evoke a range of emotions, from laughter to tears. Whether it was a tender duet between Jerusha and Daddy Long Legs or a solo song from one of the leads, each song left a lasting impression thanks to the impeccable vocal delivery and the undeniable skills between the two characters.

“Daddy Long Legs” is a gem of a musical that deserves to be celebrated, and the Covey Center’s production did it justice in every way. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring magic of live theater.
