DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT

The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office says it was shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday when authorities received a call about a vehicle crashing into a house at the intersection of 8th Street NE and Fair Avenue.

Upon arriving at the scene, one deputy reportedly saw a man walking and “attempted to engage him.”

“As soon as the deputy got out of his cruiser, the man jumped in the passenger side of the car and attempted to flee,” according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. “A struggle ensued and shots were fired. One deputy was injured in the hand and leg and the suspect successfully fled in the sheriff’s cruiser.”

The deputy’s injuries are described as non-life threatening.

The Sheriff’s Office says the suspect then crashed the cruiser into a parked car at Tell Street and East High Avenue. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.

The suspect was taken to Union Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

“This was an extremely confusing scene that encompassed three crime scenes,” according to a statement from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.
