Ga. seniors show an alarming spike in sexual diseases

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Georgia ranks among the highest in the nation for new cases of two sexually transmitted infections, according to new research from The Senior List.

The research looked at new cases of STIs, which included gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis, of those 55 and older between 2018 and 2022.

The research found that Georgia saw a 144% increase in new chlamydia cases among older adults.

The Peach State ranked fifth among the highest chlamydia rates at 20.5%.

Chlamydia was not the only STI that Georgia saw one of the highest increases in those four years.

Georgia also has the second-highest increase in gonorrhea rates among older adults. The state saw a 92% increase between 2018-2022. Georgia ranks sixth of gonorrhea rates per 100,000 adults at 21.1%.

Syphilis rates increased 55% for those 55 and older across the nation, the research shows.
