The state Department of Justice has identified the Illinois police officer who shot a 19-year-old carjacking suspect last month in Beloit.
Roscoe Police Sgt. Robert A. Lewis is currently on administrative leave, the news release states. Lewis was pursuing carjacking suspect Ray Castro north from Illinois into Beloit when Castro rammed his vehicle into Lewis’ squad car. Lewis then "fired his weapon striking the subject," according to the statement from DOJ.

Castro was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.Â
Lewis was treated at an Illinois hospital for minor injuries.
The state Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation. The Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office, city of Beloit Fire Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin State Crime Lab, a DCI crime response specialist and members of DCI’s digital evidence unit are assisting.Â
DCI will turn over reports to the Rock County District Attorney when the investigation concludes, DOJ said.
