Illinois State Police (ISP) officers arrested a Dekalb man in connection to the death of a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) Deputy on Wednesday.

ISP arrested Nathan P. Sweeney, 44, who is facing charges of reckless homicide and DUI in connection to the death of Deputy Christina Musil.

Officials say on March 28, just after 10:30 p.m. DCSO Deputy Musil was sitting in her parked squad car on the shoulder of Illinois Route 23 south of Perry Road in Waterman when a commercial motor vehicle service truck driven by Sweeney ran off the road and crashed into the back of Deputy Musil’s squad car.

Deputy Musil was taken to the hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries.

ISP officers initially issued Sweeney citations for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Improper Lane Usage, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.

At the request of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, ISP conducted a traffic crash investigation.

During the investigation, officers determined Sweeney was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.

The DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office is charging Sweeney with three counts Aggravated DUI Causing Death and one count of Reckless Homicide. Sweeney was transported to and detained at the Ogle County Jail.
