RANTOUL — The Champaign County coroner has identified the man who was killed in a Sunday shooting north of Rantoul.

Jonalberto Guadalupe Sanchez, 24, of Rantoul was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m. Sunday at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, a result of a gunshot to the chest, Coroner Stephen Thuney said.

An autopsy is scheduled for today. An inquest may be held at a later date. The death is being investigated by the Thuney’s office and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities from the sheriff’s office and Rantoul Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at 5:12 p.m. near the intersection of county roads 3200 North and 1800 East, north of Rantoul.

When they reached the scene, officers found Mr. Sanchez, who had been shot in the upper torso. Investigators believe the victim was targeted.
