Emergency blood shortage prompts Newport News blood drive

Organizers expect around 100 donations they said can save 300 lives.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Nearly 100 people are expected to donate blood in Newport News Sunday following an emergency blood shortage.

The World Mission Society Church of God and the American Red Cross are holding a blood drive at the church on Menchville Road. It runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Organizers expect around 100 donations they said can save 300 lives in New York City, saying "each pint of blood donated can save up to three lives."

"Besides saving lives, donors will enjoy giveaways, a bbq, family friendly activities such as a bounce house and face painting, and guest speakers. Moreover, Church of God volunteers are participating in the blood drive to raise awareness of the New Covenant Passover, which will be celebrated later in the month," according to a release.
