MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - The Marquette Township Board approved final language for two millage renewals on Wednesday night that will be on the Aug. 6 primary ballot.

The first millage renewal is for supplemental law enforcement coverage from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office. That millage is 0.4 mills levied for the next six years, generating more than $129,000 for the township.

The second millage is to help replace a fire truck and other equipment at the Marquette Township Fire Department. That one is 0.6 mills levied for the next six years.

“It’s like having our own supplemental police force without having to cover all the administrative headaches, the sheriff’s department is handling that for us. The second millage is the fire equipment and apparatus replacement millage. It’s a renewal for the replacement of aging fire equipment and apparatus,” Marquette Township Manager Jon Kangas said.

The board accepted the resignation of Township Treasurer Ernest Johnson, who says he wants to spend more time with his family.
