BOWIE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man is dead after the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office says he ran from deputies on Interstate 10 and was hit by a semi-truck Friday night.

Around 9:45 p.m., a deputy tried to pull over a driver suspected of being intoxicated on I-10 about 30 miles east of Bowie. The sheriff’s office says the driver refused to stop and continued westbound on the interstate.

Deputies pursued the Chevrolet Suburban for 15 miles until the driver pulled over onto the interstate median near U.S. Highway 191. CCSO says several people then jumped out of the SUV and began to run.

One of the passengers was trying to run across eastbound traffic when he was hit by a semi-truck. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The eastbound lanes of I-10 were closed for several hours as other agencies responded to investigate. That includes U.S. Border Patrol agents, who took several people in for processing.

Other details have not been released.
