The Monterey Park Police Department will be out in force on April 19 to conduct a DUI patrol.
Starting at 6 p.m., officers will be looking out for drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The department reminds the public that impaired driving can include not just alcohol but also some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs.
"We want everyone to be as safe as possible, especially when they are on the road," Monterey Park Chief of Police Scott Wiese said.
While marijuana is legal for recreational use and medicinal use, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal. The same laws apply to prescription medications.

Anyone who plans on consuming alcohol or taking drugs that may impact their ability to drive safely is urged to stay at home. Those who are caught driving impaired and receive a first-time DUI will face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
The DUI patrol is funded by a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety.
